SQL Server Always On Read-Only Routing Now Has a UI

Microsoft introduced Read-Only Routing to Always On Availability Groups many versions of SQL Server ago. However, Microsoft never added any sort of UI to SQL Server Management Studio. Years ago, DCAC released a Windows application to manage your Read-Only Routing configuration. We’ve converted our Windows application into a VS Code extension called SQL Always On Read-Only Routing Configuration, which you can download from the website or via VS Code.

As the docs say, you’ll need to have the SQL Server extension installed to use it. But given that this is for DBAs, you’ll likely already have that extension installed.

Once the SQL Always On Read-Only Routing Configuration extension is installed, after connecting to the SQL Server instance in VS Code, the Always On Read-Only Routing menu option will be available when you right-click on the instance name. The extension doesn’t require any custom tables, as it simply reads the current configuration from the system tables and shows the settings as needed.

Hopefully, this helps people manage Always On Read-Only Routing and use it more often.
